ARTWORK

CALL FOR ARTWORK NOW OPEN

As in previous years, the Bay-Delta Science Conference will feature

artwork related to the estuary and/or the conference theme.

Artists of all forms and media, including but not limited to

painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, digital, music, and

performance are encouraged to apply. Art will be displayed

throughout the duration of the conference in the poster exhibit

hall and other areas of the venue where feasible.

Art-Science Collaborations

In addition to our general call for art submissions, we are

particularly interested in featuring original works created through

collaborations between artists and scientists. Art-science collaborations deepen and enrich artistic work while creating new possibilities for communicating scientific research to broader audiences. If you are
interested in collaborating on this type of project but unsure where to start, please reach out to us at bdsc@deltacouncil.ca.gov. While we are not specifically coordinating these partnerships, we are happy to help connect you to others working in this area if we can.

Art and Storytelling Interludes

New this year, the planning team is inviting submissions for art, poetry, and storytelling interludes. These contributions will be interspersed throughout the conference agenda so that art and creative expression are woven into the scientific program. These presentations are limited to 5 minutes. If you are interested in contributing an interlude, please submit an abstract through the art submission portal linked below.

Submitting an Art Abstract

To contribute artwork for display and/or presentation at the conference, please submit a proposal at the link below that includes:

  • The name(s) of the project contributor(s),

  • A 300-word or less description of your project, including the project’s connection to science, communities, culture, and/or management of the San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary and (preferred but not required) its connection to the conference theme.

  • Display equipment and space needs.

Submissions are to be made through the abstract submission website. Projects showcasing diverse viewpoints, unique art-science collaborations, and underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged. The deadline for art submissions is July 15, 2026.

Creative Environmental Project Award

For the first time, Friends of the San Francisco Estuary will celebrate creative and original
projects
at the Bay-Delta Science Conference. Creative projects that share knowledge, expand
the conversation, and motivate action to improve the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento-San
Joaquin Delta (San Francisco Estuary) will be recognized.

To be considered for this award, all art contributions must be nominated separately following
the process described on the award website. Submitting an art abstract does not automatically
enter a project into consideration for the award. Projects and nominations are due August 14,
2026.
